Although St. Augustine is Florida’s oldest city, Amelia Island has claim to the oldest lighthouse in the state. St. Augustine is actually the oldest continuously occupied city in the entire United States, dating back to 1565. However, the first St. Augustine lighthouse crashed into the sea around 1880. The Amelia Island lighthouse in Fernandina Beach, Florida, close to some of the most popular Amelia Island Hotels, was built in 1839.
Besides being the oldest lighthouse in Florida, the Amelia Island lighthouse is one of only two remaining lighthouses in the state designed by Winslow Lewis, the renowned American lighthouse builder. Guests of Amelia Island Hotels have enjoyed this historic landmark for decades.
The Amelia Island lighthouse’s signature is a flash every 10 seconds, and can actually be seen from some of the Amelia Island Hotels. In the southeast quadrant, there is also a red sector that creates a red flash to warn boaters of the dangerous shoals on the south end of Amelia Island, where there were many shipwrecks in the late 1800s. The flash of the lighthouse on Amelia Island can be seen about 16 nautical miles, and guests of many Amelia Island Hotels thrill to the sight.
