World-renowned as “America’s Sailing Capital”, Annapolis is the very essence of a port town - developed as an export harbor for the burgeoning tobacco trade of the late 1600s and early 1700s.  The City Dock area boasts not only boats of every shape and size docked in “Ego Alley”, but dining of every type – Italian, Mexican, and Annapolitan, to name a few.  You can also learn the story of Kunte Kinte as told by Alex Haley and memorialized by Annapolis in a statue and plaques at the dock.

If the history of Annapolis is what you’re looking for, look no further than one of the historic homes located in Annapolis.  Maryland is the only state where all of the homes of the signers of the Declaration of Independence have been preserved.  These homes are available for tours and give you a feeling for the time when Annapolis was not just the capital of Maryland, but also the United States of America.  Annapolis can also offer the Banneker-Douglass Museum of African-American History and the Annapolis Maritime Museum for those looking to understand the many facets of Annapolis history.

No trip to Annapolis is complete without a visit to the United States Naval Academy.  Founded in 1845 at the behest of Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, the nine acre piece of land known as Windmill Point, Fort Severn, Annapolis, has grown into the 238 acre Naval Academy that is known today.  Tours of the Naval Academy are available, and visitors are able to see the Armel-Leftwich Visitors’ Center, the United States Naval Academy Chapel, where the crypt of John Paul Jones resides, Tecumseh, the Native American leader and warrior to whom the midshipmen pay tribute before sporting events and exams, and Bancroft Hall, one of the world’s largest dormitories.
