When a bride and groom begin to search for that magical place for their wedding, they must consider Central Mexico and the luxurious resort Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende in this historic city.

Wedding planners from the U.S. toured the facility during a whirlwind trip to Mexico in January – leaving behind an East Coast blizzard and arriving to days of beautiful weather at an exclusive hotel and venue in the heart of San Miguel de Allende, named World’s Most Beautiful Small City by Travel + Leisure and Condé Nast Traveler. The resort, Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende, was recently deemed the most romantic wedding venue by the Latin American Wedding Awards in 2025.

Planners enjoyed a full schedule of meals and activities in unique locations at the hotel, said Eva Lopez, Director of Sales and Marketing at Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende, but even in three days she could not show them everything.

“There is so much to see and do here,” said Lopez. “We did receptions on the terrace at sunset in front of the mountains and the river, lunch in the garden by the pool, dinner at The Spice Market with Southeast Asian-inspired menu. We introduced them to our culture and customs.”

The Charm of San Miguel de Allende

San Miguel de Allende, located northwest of Mexico City, is an enchanting UNESCO World Heritage site and a city with a long history dating back to the 16th century. The cobblestone streets make walking challenging, but the visitors had a chance to explore the city and its rich heritage, including visiting the iconic Parish of San Miguel Arcángel in the city center and garden (El Jardin).

Most of the time, however, was spent on the luxurious grounds of Live Aqua San Miguel de Allende, said Tabitha Roberts, Founder of Roberts & Co. Events, a Washington, D.C.-based events company.

“I was impressed by the diversity of spaces – outdoor, indoor, tents – just an abundance of choices,” said Roberts. “We were greeted so warmly, and it was just a beautiful experience and wonderful ambiance.”

She noted the infusion of the Mexican culture in many of the activities: the mariachis, tequila bar, the cooking class – all things that easily could be incorporated with any destination wedding.

Brett Galley, CEO of Brett Galley Weddings, Events + Destinations, said although she does events in Central America frequently, visiting this site changed her mind about Mexico and the possibilities for events there.

“It really changed my whole mindset. What an amazing, artistic, unique, one-of-a-kind town it is,” said Galley. “It was so well put together by ALHI, I was really impressed.”

Lopez said a highlight of the city is the callejoneada, a joyous, traditional wedding parade procession through the city with mariachis, large papier-mâché puppets (mojigangas) and dancing. Many weddings include this activity.

A Culinary, and Spiritual, Experience

Before their breakfast, the wedding planners experienced a temazcal, an ancient Mesoamerican sweat lodge ceremony, using steam, medicinal herbs and intense heat to promote physical, mental and spiritual purification. This sauna cave on the property is often offered to visiting brides and their close guests a day or two before the wedding as part of the experience, Lopez said.

“It is the end of a chapter in their life and the start of a new life celebration with family,” she said. “Up to 10 people can fit at once in the temazcal.”

Additionally, Lopez wanted the wedding planners to taste the rich offerings in the elegant Spice Market, which she said in one of the top restaurants in the city. Different tasting plates of regional foods, as well as Asian-style dishes were served for dinner. Drinks afterwards at BEKEB, included on the esteemed list of North America's 50 Best Bars, was an interesting opportunity to taste exotic craft cocktails designed by Fabiola Padilla, who founded the establishment.

The next morning, after breakfast in the Zubu Allende restaurant, a special curated wine experience at Zen Garden taught attendees about the different wines available. The group then went on a walking tour of the city, taking in the historic sites as well as the many shops and galleries along the way.

Lopez said the hotel, with its 150 rooms, was designed with brides and weddings in mind. Each room has incredible views, and even a special room for the bride. The hotel’s policy of only one wedding on any given day gives brides complete access to the suite and all the settings at the resort. The venue offers outdoor and indoor spaces for ceremonies, a sweeping staircase for dramatic entrances, smaller rooms for intimate parties and formal or casual affairs. Because the area experiences a moderate climate most of the year, al fresco dining can be arranged with little fear of inclement weather.

An Exquisite Farewell

For the last evening of the getaway, a very special dinner was planned in Sol Residence, a romantic setting in a large hotel room with an expansive terrace and swimming pool. Lopez said it was decorated with flowers and décor as if there was a wedding that night.

“It was a beautiful and magical night,” said Lopez. “This is what we offer for weddings.”

She noted that most guests visiting the hotel frequently are affiliated with a wedding and she loves to hear from those guests.

“’I’m coming back’ is what I hear all the time. They learn that life is different here and they like the experience they have had here.”

Wedding planners and the hotel organizers work together as a team, she said.

“It is no longer just a business. You become part of their memories,” she said. “We become part of the family.”
