Peter B’s Welcomes New Head Brewer
Portola Hotel & Spa unveiled the new Peter B's, Monterey's original craft brewery, last year following a $2 million renovation. The refreshed space marks a new chapter for the beloved local hangout, with an updated look, a bold new menu and the same welcoming spirit that's made it a community favorite for over 25 years.
Now, Portola Hotel & Spa welcomes Cody Leano as the brewery's Head Brewer, bringing eight years of experience in the craft beer industry to the iconic Peter B's location. Driven by a deep passion for brewing and innovation, Cody began his career at Alvarado Street Brewery in various front-of-house roles, moving to assistant brewer and eventually head brewer. This hands-on journey gave him a well-rounded understanding of both the customer experience and the brewing process.
In 2024, Cody helped open Hops and Fog Brewery in Pacific Grove, California, further developing his brewing philosophy and creating a diverse range of styles. Joining Peter B's, Cody brings a wealth of experience, creativity and a commitment to excellence. He is focused on producing a dynamic lineup of high-quality beers while expanding distribution throughout the Monterey Peninsula, allowing more people to experience what Peter B's has to offer, while honoring Peter B's flagship ales.
Peter B's showcases a bold menu and fresh lineup of house-brewed beers, staying true to its roots while embracing a vibrant, modern flavor. Guests can expect American comfort food with a coastal twist, and a range of sandwiches, burgers, pizzas, salads and bowls.
Peter B's delivers a one-of-a-kind dining experience with options for private dining in the Barrel Room or the lovely outdoor beer garden. "Peter B's has been a hidden gem and local favorite for years," said Janine Chicourrat, Managing Director of Portola Hotel & Spa. "This renovation not only honors our legacy but also reimagines it—introducing affordable menu options and transforming the space into a more welcoming, inclusive and deeply connected hub for our community than ever before."
The renovation, led by RoseBernard Studio, blends raw coastal materials like wood, copper and stone to create a warm, modern environment that celebrates both Monterey's rugged beauty and Peter B's brewing roots. A standout design element is the custom reclaimed wood table in the Barrel Room crafted by local artisan Todd Wilde using Randazzo Salvage wood and inspired by the wine barrels once used to age Peter B's beers. It's a striking blend of sustainability, local craftsmanship and storytelling—just like Peter B's itself.
Peter B’s Beer Garden
This spacious outdoor venue is outfitted with fire pits, bistro lighting and an easy flow through to Peter B’s, The Club Room or Jack's Terrace. Utilize it for receptions and engaging networking sessions.
Jack's Terrace
