ALHI BOOK CLUB
“When you ask people inside highly successful groups to describe their relationship with one another, they all tend to choose the same word. This word is not friends or team or tribe or any other equally plausible term. The word they use is family.”
— Daniel Coyle

We are so excited to bring to you our ALHI Book Club. My own personal obsession with books started as a child and I should call out our friends at Scholastic with its book fairs for expanding my world at an early age.

One of my favorite quotes about books is from none other than Dr. Suess; "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." We hope these recommendations in our club allow you to grow, be entertained and take you to places you would not have traveled without a book!
In our Beyond The Meeting Room Magazine, we always have a section of “Good Reads” to share a diverse group of perspectives with our ALHI community.
We continue to look for opportunities that provide value for you in the hopes that these initiatives make us all better personally or professionally.
Thank you for joining our club and we hope it takes you to places that surprise you often!

MIKE'S FEATURED BOOK
The Meaning of Your Life: Finding Purpose in an Age of Emptiness
If you struggle to discern life’s meaning, you’re not alone. Millions today describe a growing sense of emptiness, a lack of purpose and significance. And there’s a reason: Rapid cultural, economic, and technological changes have rewired our brains, reducing their ability to perceive depth and purpose.
In The Meaning of Your Life, social scientist and happiness expert Arthur C. Brooks shows you how to push back against these changes and find the meaning you need to live a happy, fulfilling life. Relying on cutting-edge science, he offers practical, evidence-based strategies for breaking free of the powerful trends and personal habits that dull your focus on the why of your life. Drawing on the great philosophers and the world’s faith traditions, he shows how everyone can—and must—approach life’s most important and mysterious questions and provides a blueprint that will help even the most skeptical person find a life of spiritual transcendence, passionate love, and true calling.

"Personally, I have been a fan of Arthur’s for quite some time as he focuses on our humanity and advice of dealing with life and all that comes at us. His latest book focused on the “emptiness” problem that we generally have as try to find purpose larger than our everyday tasks. He is unique in expressing love is necessary and brings that into a leadership context for many of us. The book is actionable and not just theoretical, so that it becomes a valuable tool in our collective journeys."

MIKE'S PREVIOUS FEATURED BOOKS
Sea Stories by Admiral McRaven
Sea Stories begins in 1963 at a French Officers' Club in France, where Allied officers and their wives gathered to have drinks and tell stories about their adventures during World War II-the place where a young Bill McRaven learned the value of a good story. Sea Stories is an unforgettable look back on one man's incredible life, from childhood days sneaking into high-security military sites to a day job of hunting terrorists and rescuing hostages.

"As I am always fascinated by leadership in the most extreme circumstances, this book has become one of my favorites as the stories are told through the eyes of one of my favorite leaders, Admiral Bill McRaven. Learning from a 37 year veteran of the Navy Seals who’s final service was Commander of all Special Forces Operations is just invaluable.
It helps brings perspective to the challenges we face in our daily leadership journey as well as a filter on how to look at situations. It’s a must read for any leader wanting to expand their leadership library."

A History of the World in 6 Glasses by Tom Standage
Beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and Coca-Cola: In Tom Standage’s deft, innovative account of world history, these six beverages turn out to be much more than just ways to quench thirst. They also represent six eras that span the course of civilization―from the adoption of agriculture, to the birth of cities, to the advent of globalization. "A History of the World in 6 Glasses" tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the twenty-first century through each epoch’s signature refreshment. As Standage persuasively argues, each drink is in fact a kind of technology, advancing culture and catalyzing the intricate interplay of different societies. After reading this enlightening book, you may never look at your favorite drink in quite the same way again.

"A History of the World in 6 Glasses" it’s a look at how societal/structural changes can be identified through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea and cola.
